MEET KEVIN

Hi! I’m an architect and father of a Shaker Schools graduate ('19). I'm also the husband of a Shaker Schools alum - my wife’s family moved to Shaker Heights in 1974. Our family has had the good fortune to live in the Ludlow neighborhood for 17 years,  surrounded by wonderful neighbors.

I love my community and the diverse, caring, hard-working people that live here. There's not a place I know of that's quite like it.

Part of what makes our community so unique are the relationships between our schools and our city - their strength depends on their mutual success. That's why I'm running for the school board, to keep our students, our schools, and our city strong and a place where anyone would want to live, work, and raise a family.

Kevin's face smiles, he has salt-and-pepper hair and beard. He wears a blue polo shirt and black-framed glasses.

Public service has always been important to me. Through long experience in a variety of organizations, I've learned to listen to diverse experiences, build consensus, and lead collaborative solutions. My past experience includes:

  • Shaker Schools Facilities Advisory Committee

  • Forward Together Advisory Committee

  • Shaker Square Vision Plan Advisory Committee

  • Shaker Heights City Planning Commission & Board of Zoning Appeals

  • Shaker Heights and Cleveland Landmarks Commissions

  • Ludlow Community Association, current member and past Co-President

  • Board service for numerous Northeast Ohio non-profit community development organizations

  • U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, Samoa, vocational education teacher

ARCHITECT. COMMUNITY BUILDER.

As an architect, I’m a problem solver. My day-to-day work requires me to quickly understand client organizations and their cultures and challenges, distill their needs, and synthesize solutions that integrate a broad range of programmatic requirements, functional needs, regulatory restrictions, and strict budget limitations to create and implement solutions, all the while communicating with many different  personalities, consulting experts, community stakeholders, and local authorities to achieve long-lasting results.

My work has given me experience directly relevant to the ongoing Shaker Schools Facilities Plan. I've specialized in adaptive re-use of historic buildings, and I've restored over 3.6 million square feet of older buildings to new, revitalized uses, both locally and across the country.

I'm a designer of institutional buildings, a creator of community-centered affordable housing, and a city planner. I'm also expert in integrating sustainable design strategies into projects, achieving ‘firsts’ recognized locally, state-wide, and nationally, creating buildings that are more energy-efficient, healthier for our children and teachers, and better stewards of scarce resources.

Over the past two years, I've volunteered my expertise in service to the Shaker Schools Facilities Advisory Committee and the Shaker Planning Commission Working Group to advise in creating higher quality schools that fit our walkable neighborhoods and provide better places for our children to learn and play. As a school board member, I'll be able to provide focused oversight for the $300+ million facilities project as it continues.
